The Storehouse Mission

From the very beginning, The Storehouse's mission has been to pursue a simple Biblical mandate...

"For I was hungry, and you gave me food... I was naked, and you gave me clothing..."
Matthew, Chapter 25

For 40 years we have not wavered from this mission, continuing in an unbroken stream of days giving food and clothing to those in need.

The Storehouse Vision

Keeping the warehouse adequately stocked with food
requires the dedication of the many donors to The Storehouse.

The Storehouse sees no end to the need for its mission. Therefore, the vision of The Storehouse for its future is simple:

To continue its mission, and in so doing...
To expand its service, and...
To use any and all resources to develop a financial stability that will ensure the mission of The Storehouse for the years to come.
The vision is simple, but The Storehouse knows it will be extremely difficult to achieve.

There seems to be no end for the need for our services.

Please, won't you take the time to help us help others?

About The Storehouse

The need for a food safety net has grown exponentially with changes in the economy and cutbacks in welfare and healthcare benefits. Tragically, New Mexico always ranks in the Top Three in the nation in hunger and we have the highest rate of child poverty in the United States. To combat this, there are more than 450 independently funded, nonprofit "food pantries" (the term used to describe Storehouse-type organizations) around the state.

The Storehouse, however, operates on a much larger scale that a normal food pantry. Operating on a budget of approximately $500,000...

  • In 1996, The Storehouse provided food for 33,000 meals.
  • In 1999, The Storehouse provided more than 200,000 meals.
  • In 2000, more than 650,000 meals.
  • In 2005, more than 1.9 million meals.
  • The Storehouse provided 2.5 million meals in 2006.
  • The Storehouse—a super-pantry—is the largest food pantry in New Mexico, and ranks in the top food pantries in volume in the United States. In commercial terms, The Storehouse is a $12 million dollar business—operating without a cash register.
  • The Storehouse provided more than 3.1 million meals in 2008, and has maintained that pace through 2009.

The Storehouse and Clothes Helping Kids

Clothes Helping Kids is an affiliated community partner of The Storehouse. Together, we work to meet the needs of children in our community. Over half of everything the Storehouse does goes to children. With the partnership of Clothes Helping Kids, the Storehouse is able to maximize its ability to reach and help children in need.

The Storehouse offers as much clothing as possible to help children in need directly. With Clothes Helping Kids, surplus clothing generates income that is granted to programs that support kids in various ways, such as education, health, and special needs.

For more information on Clothes Helping Kids visit www.chknm.org
or call 505-266-2002.

How Did You Do That?

The Storehouse is nationally recognized as one of the most progressive, successful - and largest -- food pantries in the country. In 2008, The Storehouse provided 3,161,000 meals to the hungry of New Mexico. The pantry's ability to get food (The Storehouse calls it "food raising"), to establish distribution methods, and to constantly rise to meet increasing demand, set it apart from other organizations.

The Storehouse offers its expertise to other organizations as a professional consultant. Although there usually is a charge for such service, money is not the object - feeding the hungry is the object. And that is what we want to help you do.

If you need our help, talk with us. We'll do whatever we can to work something out.

The History of The Storehouse

History Pastor Titus Scholl, the former pastor of St. Timothy's Lutheran Church in Albuquerque, began the first free food distribution by what is now The Storehouse in 1969. With the support of Albuquerque area churches and the New Mexico Conference of Churches, The Storehouse was incorporated in 1976. Pastor Scholl founded The Storehouse as a nonprofit, ecumenical, local, grassroots ministry, supported by individuals, congregations, nonprofits and businesses throughout Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Today, The Storehouse operates from an 11,000-square-foot warehouse on the edge of Albuquerque's old downtown area, less than 50 yards from historic Route 66.
